We launched DB2 Universal Database V8 this week, and we are poised to make this the most successful product launch in Data Management history. I would like to offer my congratulations to each of you for making the beta of DB2 V8 the most successful in Data Management history. We see the evidence of this success in customers raving about our beta release, in over 300 articles by the independent press, in positive feedback from respected industry analysts all around the world and in Business Partners clamoring for the official product release. In just <deleted> weeks, a record <deleted> companies have registered to receive the <deleted>; equally impressive is that the actual number of downloads totals another record of <deleted> with <deleted> likely to upgrade or recommend V8.
But as you know, a great beta release is just a first step; we cannot rest on our laurels. I want you to recognize that IBM corporate management is 100% committed to making <deleted> release -- our most important in 30 years -- a resounding success. To achieve this, we need the continued dedication and total commitment of each and every member of the Data Management Team.

"I downloaded the 8.1 Beta, and this is some of the best stuff I've seen happen to DB2 in a long time. Federated data queries involving UDB V8.1b on WinNT, UDB V7.2 on Solaris and DB2 for OS/390 V6.1 (yes, 6.1!) on MVS worked like a charm. I just about fell through the floor. We didn't have to install anything on the older DB2 servers, either, not even on the MVS."
